San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has been named the new captain of the French national team by head coach Frederic Fauthoux.
At just 22 years old, Wembanyama steps into the primary leadership role for Les Bleus as they prepare for the upcoming window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers.
Addressing his teammates following the appointment, Wembanyama made his approach to the role clear.
"Well, honestly it's a real honor," Wembanyama said, according to BasketNews. "I know I'm the youngest here but I fully intend to lead by example. I know you guys are counting on me to get buckets, to get stops."
With the qualifiers ahead, Wembanyama takes on the captaincy as France looks to navigate its pathway toward the 2027 tournament.
